A crucial piece of spiritual soul jazz finally gets a vinyl issue for the first time
courtesy of Outernational Sounds. Jesse Sharps recorded Sharps And Flats in 1985,
a time when he was leading Horace Tapscott’s Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. Indeed
Tapscott himself plays piano on two tracks here, and final entry ‘McKowsky’s First
Fifth’ is a full P.A.P.A. piece. For the first six numbers Sharps brings the freedom
and fire of the P.A.P.A to his quintet while allowing more space for classic melody

Journey Into Nigritia, the 1983 debut LP from the late jazz pianist Nate Morgan, gets
a reissue courtesy of Outernational Sounds. Morgan was a highly talented player, one
who joined Horace Tapscott’s Union Of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension as a
teenager, and his prodigious abilities as both an instrumentalists and bandleader
shine through on Journey Into Nigritia. The influence of Tapscott’s spiritual style
is keenly felt here.

"Betty Lou" by Betty Lou Landreth was released as a private press in 1979. This is
the first time the LP has ever been reissued. "Betty Lou" was Landreth’s only LP and
saw her get some serious session players on the LP including Motown session group
The Funk Brothers and Marcus Belgrave from Detroit’s Tribe Collective. "Betty Lou"
meanders from soulful funky jazz into country rock and torch songs.
